FIRE DANGER RATINGS HAVE CHANGED

New NSW FDR sign

The new Australian Fire Danger Rating System started on 1 September 2022. This is the most significant change to fire danger ratings in more than 50 years, so it’s important you understand what’s changing and what support is available.

The key changes are:

  • A true national system used in all states and territories, meaning you’ll see the same ratings being used wherever you live, work or travel.
  • A more accurate system, using eight different vegetation types to inform fire danger ratings.
  • Fire danger ratings will be simplified from six levels to four, and each level will give clear actions to take to stay safe during the fire season.
  • Four-day ratings will be used, to give the community better information to help plan activities.
  • New fire danger rating signs across NSW, showing the new ratings and action statements
