COMPLETION OF GREENETHORPE-KOORAWATHA ROAD UPGRADE

NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison has today announced the completion of the nearly $3 million upgrade of Greenethorpe-Koorawatha Road in the Weddin Shire.

Connecting the rural villages of Greenethorpe and Koorawatha in central New South Wales, this vital route links communities on either side of the Weddin and Hilltops Shires boundary, supporting the region’s agricultural economy.

The project received funding of $2.94 million under the NSW Government’s Fixing Local Roads (FLR) Program, along with a $50,000 contribution from Weddin Shire Council.

The upgrade of this 7.1km section of road, which included rehabilitating the road pavement, has made this route safer and more reliable for residents, farmers, and the heavy vehicles that rely on it, particularly travelling to and from silos during harvest season.

The improvements enhance this region’s economic growth and access to essential services like schools and healthcare, ensuring the ability for all-weather travel for all road users.

Key upgrades included installing guideposts, improved drainage, vegetation management, and reinforced shoulders to support grain transport.

Additionally, the project allowed the council to establish table drains, install protected headwalls, and replace damaged stormwater crossings.

This will strengthen the road’s resilience to natural disasters and significantly reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison said:

“This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure and ensuring safer, more connected communities.

“The Greenethorpe-Koorawatha Road safety improvements will allow people to travel more safely and efficiently between rural NSW townships.

“By enhancing access between these two communities, this project will foster long-term connectedness and economic growth well beyond its completion. “

Weddin Shire Council Mayor, Cr Paul Best said:

“We’re thrilled to see the completion of the Greenethorpe-Koorawatha Road upgrade, which will directly improve access to healthcare, education, and essential services for our communities.

“With safer all-weather access, school buses will no longer face detours, even in heavy rain.

“This project will bring long-lasting benefits to both Greenethorpe and Koorawatha, enhancing connectivity and safety for all residents.”
