Grenfell Main Street Renewal

Project Completion

The Grenfell Main Street Renewal project is now nearing completion (with festoon lighting to go), bringing new life to one of New South Wales’ most historic streets. The project involved a comprehensive upgrade of the road pavement, underground services, and streetscape, transforming the heart of Grenfell while preserving its historic charm.

The revitalisation of the Main Street included new streetlights, tree and shrub plantings, garden beds, and fresh asphalt surfaces, creating a more inviting and attractive environment for both locals and visitors.

Key Features of the Renewal

Tree Planting Scheme: Over 50 trees, including varieties such as Ornamental Pear and Autumn Blaze Maple, have been planted along the street. These trees will offer cooling shade in the summer and vibrant colour in the autumn, enhancing the natural beauty of the street.

Infrastructure Improvements: The project involved upgrading the road pavement with a concrete base and asphalt surface, along with the installation of improved drainage and lighting systems.

This project was proudly funded by the NSW Government and Australian Government through a number of funding programs and delivered in collaboration with local contractors.

Festoon Lighting

One of the final and most exciting additions to the Main Street is the festoon lighting, which will further enhance the street’s atmosphere, particularly during evening events.

The festoon lighting includes:

  • White festoon lights spaced 500mm apart, installed along council-owned certified poles.
  • Tensile cabling and support structures certified to the highest standards.
  • Automated software to manage the lighting, providing flexibility for different events and settings.
  • Removal of the old streetlights on the eastern and western sides of the street.

Residents and visitors will remember the old festoon lighting in areas along the Main Street. The new festoon lighting will be strung from the top end to the bottom end.

The official launch of the festoon lighting will take place on 31 December 2024 as part of the "Light Up the Night" New Year’s Eve Street Party. This event will celebrate the transformation of Grenfell’s Main Street with a festive display of lights and community spirit.

Festoon Lighting: Project Update

Council is excited to announce the final preparations for the new festoon lighting along Main Street, with nighttime road closures scheduled to ensure safe and efficient installation. These closures are essential for the installation of new lighting poles, the stringing of festoon lights, and the removal of redundant streetlights, all of which will add charm and enhance the experience on Main Street.

Road Closure Schedule

Road closures will be in effect from 6:00pm to 12:00am on the following dates and sections of Main Street:

  • Monday 18 November 2024: Caltex to Chrysler Car Museum

  • Wednesday 20 November 2024: Forbes Street to Criterion Hotel
  • Thursday 21 November 2024: Criterion Hotel to Albion Hotel
  • Monday 25 November 2024: Albion Hotel to Short Street
